Each station serves everyone within a radius r of it — but once r exceeds half the station spacing, neighbouring circles overlap and the shaded regions are counted twice. Equal-area strips cut each catchment at the midpoint to its neighbours and stretch it perpendicular to the line, keeping the same π·r² per station with no double counting. Both overlays the two shapes so you can compare them directly.
